Saints Golf secure Top 10 finish in Peru

Saints Golf secure Top 10 finish in Peru

May 4th, 2017

For the 5th consecutive year Saints Golf were honoured with an invite to the prestigious Campeonato Internacional de Aficianados, held every year at Lima Golf Club. With an international field and both an individual and team element to the competition it is an excellent chance for our players to test them selves on a different stage.

With 36 holes to play the Saints Golf team of George Burns and Bjorn Bojesen were lying 10th in the team event and 11th / 32nd respectively in the individual tournament, both feeling positive that a strong push over the final two days would move them up the leaderboard.
The 3rd round saw a switch in fortunes for the two players with George struggling to find fairways and getting one of those days when every errant tee shot is punished by a tree, it happens so easily at Lima GC. A late rally with two birdies in the final 4 holes kept the damage to a minimum and a score of 77 (+5) was posted. Bjorn started to find the groove in his swing and after chipping in on the first for a birdie would play strong, solid golf throughout the round and stood on the 16th tee at -3. Unfortunately a pushed drive on 16 and a 3 putt on the final green would leave a sour taste in the mouth but nevertheless a score of 71 (-1) was a fine effort and moved him up the leaderboard.
The final round today had us paired with Colombia and both players knew excatly what they had to do with a target in their minds. It was to prove though a frustrating round on the greens with both players having a lot of looks at birdie but failing to convert when needed. The greens here at Lima have a lot of grain and slope, very different to what we experience back in Scotland and it can be tough to find the correct combination of line and pace. Ultimately George would sign for another solid round of 72 (Level) and Bjorn 74 (+2). This would give us a Top 10 finish in the team event and be the highest finishing European pairing with George and Bjorn finishing 15th and 21st respectively in the individual tournament. Great playing boys!

It has been another wonderful experience in Lima this week and one the players will never forget. Both have been first class ambassadors for Saints Golf and the town of St Andrews. Although both will feel they could have been higher on the leaderboard it has been a solid week in completely foreign conditions and great preperation for the National Championships beginning Tuesday at Moortown GC.

Thank you to the organisers for honouring us with the invitation and we hope to be back next year for another shot at it!
