David Watt

Head Performance Coach

David moved to St Andrews in January 2011 to take up the role of Senior Instructor for the St Andrews Links Trust, based out of the world class St Andrews Links Golf Academy.

Shortly after beginning at the Academy he started working in a coaching capacity for the University of St Andrews and quickly moved on to become the Men’s Head Coach for Saints Golf. In 2012 it was decided to appoint a Director of Golf to the programme, a move which David relished allowing him the chance to develop Saints Golf into an internationally respected University Golf Programme. As well as retaining a coaching role with the students David now focusses on areas such as fundraising, recruitment, marketing and development – all in an effort to achieve our ambitious goals as a programme at one of the finest and most historic Universities in the world.

David’s coaching background started back in 2002 when he took a position at Kings Acre Golf Academy in Edinburgh; it was here his coaching development started under the mentorship of both Alan Murdoch and Claude Harmon III. An early interest in technology and its use in fields such as biomechanics stemmed from his educational background studying Physics at the University of St Andrews. Upon leaving Edinburgh he started his own coaching business in the West of Scotland and at this time became involved in the early days of the TPI educational programme. In 2011 David was one of the first coaches in the UK to obtain a Level 3 TPI certification which was immediately put to good use at the St Andrews Links Academy working with their technology such as the AMM 3D Motion Tracking System, SAM Balance Lab and Trackman.

  • “I decided to start supporting the University of St Andrews golf programs about five years ago. I thought I could help make a difference for these programs by financially helping you start a golf donor program. I'm very proud that you have used my funds to create a Saints Golf Website to help you get the word out.”
Van deWar – 600 Club Founding Member
  • “The golf programme they have at St Andrews is a great option for players who want top level academics but do not want to compromise on the quality of the golf programme - it's a special opportunity to be a student athlete in the Home of Golf.”
    Claude Harmon III
